Deadline Thursday to apply for tunnel toll relief program

You have until Thursday, February 15 to sign up for VDOT's toll relief program.

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WVEC) -- If you often use the Downtown and Midtown tunnels and find you're struggling to pay your toll bills, there is a program that may offer assistance, but the deadline is Thursday.

To be eligible you must live in Portsmouth or Norfolk. You must also use the tunnels at least eight times per month and make $30,000 or less a year.

To apply, go to an EZPass customer service center by the Thursday. For more information, visit vdottollrelief.com.

Make sure you bring proof of income and residency.

According to VDOT officials, more than 1,400 people have already enrolled in the program.

Ashley Hurd is one of the people already enrolled.

"I appreciated the efforts, but at the end of the day it's still an extra bill I have to pay," said Hurd.

Elizabeth River Crossings runs the tunnels. The company agreed to contribute $500,000 a year for 10 years to VDOT's toll relief program.

According to VDOT's website, the state isn't able to reduce or remove the tolls; however, people who live in Norfolk and Portsmouth are still pushing for change.

"Get rid of the tolls. Bottom line," said Hurd.
