NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- Construction begins Monday on another multi-million dollar road project that VDOT hopes will help drivers beat the backups.

The I-64 Northampton Boulevard Interchange is one of the busiest in Hampton Roads, and is expecting some big improvements. The $3.9 million contract is expected to widen the I-64 West exit ramp approaching toward the Northampton Boulevard from 2 lanes to 5 lanes.

There will be 2 left turns, 2 right turns and the existing and the continuous flow lane will be maintained but tightened.

The traffic light is also expected to be upgraded.

This project is expected to increase the off-ramp capabilities to improve operations and safety.

Nightly shoulder and mobile lane closures should be expected.

The improvements can't come fast enough, as traffic is expected to only get worse thanks to the newly opened Norfolk Premium Outlets, as well as Hampton Roads' first IKEA coming soon to the area. The overall project is expected to be completed by May of 2018.
