CHARLOTTE, N.C. — If your holiday plans include traveling overseas, you'll want to make sure you can get back in the country.

Starting Monday, Dec. 6, all international travelers, including Americans, will have to show a negative COVID-19 test 24 hours before departure. While there are no testing or vaccine requirements for those flying domestically, the White House says it's not completely ruled out.

"Nothing is off the table," White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said. "But we do have some strong protections in place, already including the requirement of mask wearing."

The federal mask requirement has been extended until March 18 for all domestic flights and public transportation, with the fines doubled for people who don't comply.

"We really, really want to urge folks to give the folks on the plane some grace, wear your mask, think of your neighbors... you know travel is a privilege, not a right," Willis Orlando, travel expert with Scott's Cheap flights, explained.

If you are hosting holiday celebrations, experts advise to keep gatherings small, host guests outdoors when possible and regularly wash your hands.

Orlando said there will be some people who decide to not take a chance on travel due to travel restrictions.

"Check your cancellation policy and change your policy with the airline if the time comes to travel and you don't feel comfortable," Willis said.

If scrapping the trip is a last-minute decision, travel experts advise calling the airline before canceling.

"If you decide you're uncomfortable travel, call the airline and see what they'll do for you," Willis said. "A lot of times they will give you at least the value of the flight on a voucher that you could use on a future trip."
