NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- It's never too early to prepare for winter weather. The worst time to get the salt and shovels is right before a big one strikes.

Last January, the snowstorm rush hit Taylor's Do It Center on Colley Avenue in Norfolk. Store Manager George Wolf remembers lines wrapped around the store as people waited for more stock.

He picked up salt and 144 shovels from Virginia Beach and on the way back, people tried to buy his shovels.

"I had several people blowing their horns at me, saying, 'Hey, stop! I'll buy a shovel, I'll pay you twice the amount,'" said Wolf. "I shook my head and said, 'You can follow me but I'm not stopping.'"

As we get more into winter, Wolf suggests people not wait until the last minute to get items like shovels.

"Get one, have it in your garage or your shed. Salt don't go bad, and there's no shelf life on it, so buy you a bag or two earlier when it's in stock," he said.

It's also a good idea to get ice scrapers and leave one in your car. A frost guard also makes ice and snow removal from your car a bit easier.

"It straps onto your side view mirrors, in the morning all you gotta go do is go out there undo the straps, pull it off, [and] you got a clear windshield," said Wolf.
