LUMBERTON, N.C. – Turning 13, it’s one of those very special birthdays that ushers in the teenage years.

However, that special birthday was overshadowed by Hurricane Matthew for a girl in Lumberton.

That's until a group of caring soldiers helping with flood relief efforts stepped in to help make it a memorable one for the teen.

Earlier this week the group of North Carolina National Guard soldiers stopped by the Scott family house while on patrol. That’s where they learned of a very special birthday. The Scott’s daughter turned thirteen right after the historic floods began in the area.

The soldiers got to work with the help of local businesses, the USO of NC and the North Carolina Civil Air Patrol to plan a surprise birthday celebration.

The group arrived singing Happy Birthday and they also brought a cake and gifts for the teen.
