VDOT monitors roads ahead of Nor'easter

Roads are too wet to be pre-treated, but VDOT said the roads will probably be too warm for snow to stick.

NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- The fourth nor'easter of March is making its way toward Hampton Roads. The storm system is expected to bring snow to our area on Wednesday.

FORECAST: Morning rain changing to snow

Trucks with the Virginia Department of Transportation have been on standby since midnight and are prepared to work throughout today.

VDOT officials say they will spare no expense to clear roads and interstates.

Their snow removal budget was $5.3 million for the 2017 to 2018 winter season. That's gone now, but VDOT says that's not a big deal because they can pull money from other parts of their budget, if needed.

Overall, it's been a busy year for VDOT. It began just after the new year, when the region saw 10 inches of snow fall on January 3. Then just a couple weeks later on January 17, we got hit again! It wasn't as bad, but we did get two to three inches of snow.

Then earlier this month on March 12, we got lots of rain and another one to three inches. VDOT did not pretreat roads ahead of that storm because of all the rain, and that is the same story on Wednesday: there's too much rain to pre-treat roads.

But VDOT also said the roads are too warm to really worry much about the latest snow sticking.
