Chrysler Museum offering 'bucket list' opportunity to see a Vermeer

Rare art on display at Chrysler Museum

NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- Art lovers are being offered a special treat at the Chrysler Museum in November- a rare look at a Vermeer painting.

Paintings by Vermeer are exceptionally rare, with only 35 known to exist.

The artist was not very well known or appreciated in his day, working mainly for a single person who requested at least 20 of his paintings.

"A Lady Writing", which was made in 1665 is being lent to the Chrysler Museum by the National Gallery of Art until December 18th.

The public is invited to two special events held at the Chrysler Museum of Art:

  • Sunday, Nov. 20, 2 p.m. in the Kaufman Theater: Arthur K. Wheelock, Jr., curator of Northern Baroque Paintings at the National Gallery of Art, will give a talk on the old master’s work. Free to attend, seating is limited.
  • Thursday, Dec. 8, 2 p.m. Chief Curator Lloyd DeWitt will give a special gallery talk exploring the subjects and psyches in Vermeer’s paintings. Meet at the Welcome Desk in Huber Court for this free talk.
