Urban Bush Women to perform at Attucks Theatre

NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- Brooklyn-based dance company Urban Bush Women will premiere 'Hair and Other Stories' at the Attucks Theatre at the end of April.

The Urban Bush Women were founded in 1984 by choreographer Jawole Willa Jo Zollar. The group brings a woman-centered perspective as members of the African Diaspora community.

The upcoming performance is presented by the Virginia Arts Festival.

It's described as a "multidisciplinary work that addresses how one’s self-image is formed through perceptions of family, history, identity, and values. This often humorous, sometimes poignant, always compelling piece combines dance with storytelling, and builds on conversations with the audience."

“With the original work, we set out to explore the place of hair in women’s lives, and its relationship to ideas about beauty, social position, heritage, and self-esteem,” says Zollar.

'Hair and Other Stories' premiers on Saturday, April 22nd at 8 p.m. at the Attucks Theatre.

Tickets are $20 and $35 and are available online
