HOW TO: Play a guitar for beginners

Meteorologist Tim Pandajis always wanted to learn how to play a guitar. He sat down with an instructor to learn the basics.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WVEC) -- If you've ever found yourself in that group of people who wish they could play guitar you also would find 13News Now Meteorologist Tim Pandajis in that group.

Tim turned to guitar instructor Mark Dunn at Alpha Music to learn the basics.

The first step is learning to hold the guitar properly. Learning about the musical scale comes right after that.

“The way the guitar works, we have seven natural notes: A, B, C, D, E, F, and G. Natural notes are not a sharp or a flat. (There are) 12 notes in western civilization music," explained Dunn. "A standard tuning is low E, and then A, and then D, and then G, B, and then high E. You can remember that by 'elephants and donkeys grow big ears.'”

There are a lot of scales to ease people into playing the guitar.

“For beginners, what I get into is something called the Pentatonix Scale. It allows us to do some really cool stuff without an ounce of training.”
