Making Your Mark: Dancing Deputies for The Special Olympics

13News Now LaSalle Blanks has the story

CHESAPEAKE, VA (WVEC) -- Chesapeake Sheriff's Deputies have dance fever as they take on an extra beat these days -- learning new dance routines to help Special Olympics Virginia.

They're getting ready for their 3rd Annual "Dancing with the Athletes" fundraiser -- a "Dancing with the Stars"-like competition, in which deputies dance with Special Olympics athletes to raise money for Special Olympics Virginia.

Sheriff's Deputy Jonay Artis and her partner Chad are the defending champions.

"She's a great dancer, she's funny and cute," Chad said.

Chad and Deputy Artis won last year's competition with an electric routine that energized the crowd at the Chesapeake Conference Center, sparking smiles, chants and cheers. Deputy Artis loves the fact that her department is sparking spirit and confidence in the athletes that will last far beyond the special night is over.

"All of athletes were champions that night," Deputy Artis said.

The 3rd Annual "Dancing with the Athletes" ballroom competition is December 13th at the Chesapeake Conference Center at 700 Conference Center Drive. A cocktail hour starts at 6 p.m. The competition is from 7-9:30 p.m.

13News Now Ashley Smith and LaSalle Blanks will serve as two of the judges for the evening.
