HAMPTON ROADS, Va. (WVEC) -- First class petty officers and chief petty officers in the Navy pitched in at Union Mission Ministries Thursday. It's a way for sailors to give back to the less fortunate.
"We provide clothing, we provide, toiletries and a place to shower, we provide job and life skills training. Anything we can provide to help people out of their homelessness." said Linda Jones, spokeswoman.
Sailors put in hard work, moving furniture, cleaning and fixing bikes. "Me coming from the Dominican Republic, my country is really poor, so for me it's a privilege to come help other people," said Josline Paulino.
On top of giving back, sailors are getting personal growth. This volunteering opportunity is part of a program in which Chief Petty Officers mentor First Class Petty Officers. Officials tell 13NewsNow the goal is for First Class Petty Officers to learn leadership skills.
