Restaurant giving Thanksgiving meals to service members

One local restaurant wants to make sure those people still have a place filled with love

NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) - For most, Thanksgiving is a time for family. But for many in our area, the sacrifice that comes with military service is especially great now.

Many active duty military members don't get to be with their loved ones for the holidays. The Humboldt Steel Corporation wants to make sure those people still have a place filled with love.

"When you are in the military, your duty calls to be elsewhere most of the time," explained General Manager Ethan Thorndike.

Thorndike's invitation goes out to all active military men and woman. He was in the Air Force and knows what it is like to be without loved ones during the holiday season.

"If they don't have anyone, it will just show hey you are loved."

On Thanksgiving, both Humboldt Steel Corporation locations will be open for active servicemen and women to eat. The Portsmouth location will open at 5 p.m. while the Norfolk location will open at 3 p.m.

Thorndike said, "We have plenty of food. We have full Thanksgiving, turkeys and if we run out at all, then we will run it off our own menu.”

On a holiday that is centered around being thankful, Thorndike believes this is just a little token of their gratitude.

"If we can show our support of love and generosity to the people that show us the ultimate sacrifice for what they do, then that is the littlest thing we can do," Thorndike explained.
