One City Holiday Food Drive helping disadvantaged on peninsula

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WVEC) -- More than 200 volunteers are working to help the disadvantaged on the Peninsula, and they need your help!

The 16th Annual Newport News One City Holiday Food Drive event starts on December 14. 

Volunteers will be collecting non-perishable foods from the community and raising funds to pay for 1,000 turkeys to complete the holiday meal. 

The event is designed to benefit disadvantaged families for the two weeks the children are out of school for the holidays. 

Here are the events organizers want you to know about: 

  • Friday, Dec 15 starting at 6 p.m. is Community Day.  Family oriented activities and refreshments are available.  Also Champagne, an All Ladies band, and I hosting our first One City Holiday Food Drive Business Mixer.  Food or Monetary Donations suggested to attend.
  • Saturday, Dec 16 from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m., the Food Drive Committee hosts our traditional Food Drive Party. It's a day of live music, entertainment, dancing, toys from Mrs. Santa, books from Books on Bikes, NNPD canine exhibition and more.  Everyone is invited to bring non-perishable food items to Denbigh Community Center. Curbside drop off is available for those who do not wish to come inside.
  • Sunday, Dec 17 New Beech Grove Baptist Church is hosting a Gospel Concert to raise donations and create a sense of Unity in the Community, while adding some holiday cheer.
  • Monday, Dec 17 from 1 p.m. -7 p.m., Deserving disadvantaged families may come to the Denbigh Community Center to shop for food and receive a turkey. Donations accepted, but are not required to attend.  To shop, attendees must have a valid Newport News identification. Only one food distribution per household.
