POQUOSON, Va. (WVEC) -- A boy in Poquoson is at home now after he was hit by a car, and now the community is coming together to lend a helping hand.

11-year-old Kaelen Jones is still a little banged up after Wednesday afternoon.

His mom Katie Jones was frantic with worry on her way to the hospital.

“I was thinking is he alive, okay, what are the injuries, and you think the worst,” Jones says. “It's a mom's worst nightmare.”

Kaelen suffered a collapsed lung, a laceration on his kidney and some fractures in his back.

Janet Shepard started a GoFundMe. She's close friends with the family and was Kaelen's babysitter for many years.

“People in Kansas, California, even people we don't know are donating,” Shepard days. “It’s overwhelming.”

The entire family, including Kaelen, is grateful

“It makes me feel happy and thankful,” Kaelen says.
