Military Dream Week: Surprising a future mother

13News Now and the City of Norfolk, as part of Military Dream Week, surprised Destiny with a thousand dollars to spend on anything she wanted!

NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- It's a typical Navy family story: A newly married couple gets transferred from San Diego to Norfolk.

That newly married couple is Christopher and Destiny Conover. Christopher works as an E3 on the USS Lincoln.

Destiny found out she was having her first baby with no family or close friends to support her through it. That's when her best friend in Redding, California, Rachel Mollin, sent her our way.

13News Now and the City of Norfolk, as part of Military Dream Week, surprised Destiny with a thousand dollars to spend on anything she wanted!

The hope is that the money would help with baby expenses or flights home once the baby is born.

Destiny was stunned and touched when she opened the door for our crew. We showed up with balloons and cake.

The City of Norfolk's military liaison, Doug Beaver, had a onesie for her as well as the money.

City spokesperson Lori Crouch said it's a tough start when you come to a city you don't know. Crouch wanted to make sure they felt supported.

"Babies are expensive. We knew this could start them off on the right foot," Beaver said.

"We're excited and nervous because this is usually something you do when family is around, but we'll be OK," Destiny said.

Beaver said it's that attitude that will help her through the Navy life.
