Downtown Norfolk Council envisions park for NEON District

More changes could be coming to the growing arts district in Norfolk.

NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- More changes could be coming to the growing arts district in Norfolk.

The Downtown Norfolk Council is working on a project that would create a park on a piece of city property.

This project is still in its very early stages but planners are hoping it catches the attention of city council.

"The Arts District is still a neighborhood in progress," said Rachel McCall, a Special Projects Manager with the Downtown Norfolk Council.

Between the vibrant displays and the eye-catching art is a lot of room for growth and improvement in the NEON District.

"The NEON District is all about experimentation and a lot of community engagement," she said.

On the corner of West Olney Road and Wilson Avenue sits the piece of land McCall believes could become something useful for people in Norfolk.

"This plot floods a little bit so we think it's a great spot to do some water retention, to deal with water in new ways," she said. "There's a lot of precedence out there for parks that use water, recreation, art, and all of it combined."

Their vision is to make this into a park that is both useful and enjoyable.

It's still early in the project, yet to go to city council for approval.

But, based on the input from the public, it's a popular idea.

"This is something that we've heard from residents that there's not enough recreation downtown and in the NEON District," she said.

Once the proposal gets in the hands of city council, hopefully this spring, planners hope this becomes a part of the growth and vibrancy in the NEON District.
