Norfolk police investigating homicide on Thompson Road

NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- Norfolk police are investigating a homicide after a 20-year-old man died at a local hospital following a shooting Friday, officials said in a news release.

According to police, the shooting occurred in the 7900 block of Thompson Road around 9:45 p.m.

Once on the scene, police found Jalen C.Barnhill suffering from a gunshot wound outside.

He was transported to a local hospital with injuries considered life-threatening, but died shortly afterward.

Barnhill's neighbor Amanda Hernandez didn't want to be on camera but she told us what she overheard officers saying as she walked home Friday night.

"I overheard, the gentleman say the guy was shot 6 times. He said it was a smaller gun, like a 22-and that it was at close range, and that he might have used the pillow to do it, because no one on the street heard it at all. Usually if you hear a gunshot around here, you hear it- it’s loud you know- and no one heard nothing so it was a big surprise," said Hernandez.

Other neighbors say that they saw a red mini van park in the grass and that minutes later screaming could be heard from Barnhill's home. Neighbors say that's around the time two men backed up and drove the van out of the neighborhood through a back alley. But Hernandez says the incident doesn't impact her opinion of the street.

“God has a plan for everything, and you know that was meant to be, you know whatever had happened. So, I don’t live scared everyday, you have to live life to its fullest you know? You just can’t be scared to live in you house like a hermit, no – it happened," says Hernandez

Detectives have not released any suspect information, motive, or circumstance surrounding this shooting; however, they ask anyone with information to contact the Norfolk Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP or submit a tip through the P3Tips mobile app.
