Onesie and diaper drive for Hurricane Harvey babies

Efforts to help Hurricane Harvey victims are also continuing.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WVEC) -- Students at Gildersleeve Middle school in Newport News filled an entire truck with onesies, pampers and diapers for baby victims of Hurricane Harvey.

It's all part of the Office of the Newport News Commonwealth’s Attorney Outreach Program.

The FBI is also teaming up with this project.

The items donated will be heading to the Red Cross and the Houston Diaper Bank.

Outreach Counselor & Education Coordinator for the Office of the Newport News Commonwealth’s Attorney Sherron Hedgepeth-Sanders says the project started off small, but is now flowing.

“Babies don't have a voice and just like we have clothes they need onesies and pampers to keep them dry,” Hedgepeth-Sanders says. “Because we are building relationships it has caused the entire Hampton Roads area to reach out because we are one.”

Hedgepeth-Sanders says they have already collected 6,815 diapers and 8,808 baby wipes. They will be collecting donations until Friday, September 29.

You can drop off diapers and onesies at Sherron Hedgepeth-Sanders’ office, 2501 Washington Ave, 6th Floor, Newport News, VA 23607.
