Students rally in support of TCC faculty, ahead of layoffs

The most recent layoffs were announced last month and will take effect June 30.

NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- On Tuesday, students at Tidewater Community College will rally in support of faculty members. It comes as TCC gets ready for another round of layoffs.

The most recent layoffs were announced last month and will take effect June 30.

At 10 a.m., students and other people in the community who have been positively impacted by professors at Tidewater Community College will have a chance to leave a message of support.

Back in March, the TCC president sent an email to professors saying layoffs in the English and Emergency Medical Services departments were needed.

In a statement to 13News Now TCC said, "Enrollment numbers and budgets are always changing. We must find ways to work within those realities without losing sight of the needs of the people our college serves."

Student Kitrina Budyach organized Tuesday's event as a show of support.

"This is something that I wanted to do to give back to them and something that they'll be able to keep for a long time and see that their work here has not been in vain, and that they have made a positive influence in this community," she said.

If you're interested in leaving a message, the event starts at 10:00 by the flagpoles on Granby Street. The messages of support will then be put up inside the student center lobby.
