STAUNTON, Va. (News Leader) -- The Augusta County Sheriff's Office is investigating graffiti found on a Staunton bridge that included swastikas and racial slurs.
"There's a little bit of everything," said Lt. Aaron Le Veck of the sheriff's office after he viewed the graffiti on Tuesday.
The bridge, located near the 800 block of Sangers Lane, was vandalized with white spray paint, including a swastika in the middle of the road.
Le Veck said the Virginia Department of Transportation has been notified of the graffiti.
"They have a crew that will go out and take care of it," he said.
The graffiti on the bridge was reported Sunday, less than a week after numerous recruitment flyers for the Ku Klux Klan were distributed in Staunton, Waynesboro, Augusta County and other areas of the Shenandoah Valley.
Media reports of the latest graffiti on Sangers Lane also prompted an Augusta County woman to notify the sheriff's office about racially tinged graffiti she found on the road and a utility pole about two weeks ago near the intersection of Old Greenville Road and Chestnut Ridge Road, past Mint Spring.
Le Veck said red, blue and orange spray paint was used. The graffiti also included crude depictions of male genitalia, he said.
Both incidents remain under investigation.
