'Dawgs' ride to help families of injured, sick military members

Salty Dawgs Motorcycle Riding Club of Virginia's poker run benefits the Zachary and Elizabeth Fisher House at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth.

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WVEC) -- The horsepower may have parts of Hampton Roads shaking on May 5 when Salty Dawgs Motorcycle Riding Club of Virginia hosts its 12th Annual Poker Run.

The group, which consists of active duty, retired, and honorably discharged members of the Navy, will use the event to raise money for the Zachary and Elizabeth Fisher House at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth.

The house, like others that are made possible by the Fisher House Foundation, offers a home-away-from-home for families of people being treated at the naval medical center. The house offers six rooms and one suite that can accommodated 21 relatives of patients at any given time.

The poker run begins at 9 a.m. on May 5 at the 97.3 Eagles’ Nest Rockin’ Country Bar, which is located at 1723 Parkview Drive in Chesapeake.

The event features a breakfast buffet as well as a bike show, live auction, door prizes, and raffles.

The costs to enter the poker run are $10 for riders and $5 for passengers. Anyone interested in participating in the event can contact Salty Dawgs through its Facebook page.
