HAMPTON, Va.- Oscar Smith players wanted it so badly. Not just winning a state title for the first time since 2011, but in the process break the string of heart breaking losses the past 2 years to the school that gave them such disappointment. That would be the Westfield Bulldogs. In the end, the Tigers fell short losing in the Class 6 state finals 28-21 Sunday night from Hampton University's Armstrong Field. "We came up short again", says running Cam'Ron Kelly who had 2 touchdowns in the game.
The Tigers opened the scoring in the first quarter with a 71 yard touchdown run from Kelly for a 7-0 lead. Westfield would then lead by 7 at halftime and proceed to take a 20-7 advantage in the third quarter. Oscar Smith then retook the lead on a Dominique Brooks one yard score to go up 21-20, but that would be their last lead of the game as the Bulldogs scored on an 88 yard score from Noah Kim to Gavin Kilev. Westfield went on to win their third straight state title as Oscar Smith finished the season 12-3.
