Tides fall in extras to Knights

NORFOLK, Va.- Nicky Delmonico's two-run homer - his second two-run shot of the game - powered the Charlotte Knights to a 5-3, 12-inning win over the Tides Sunday afternoon at Harbor Park. With the score tied 3-3 in the 12th, Delmonico connected on a 3-2 pitch off of Vidal Nuño (1-3) for his fifth home run of the season, helping the Knights salvage a split of the four-game set. The homer capped a comeback win for the Knights, as Charlotte trailed the contest 3-2 in the ninth before plating a run off of Edwin Jackson to send the game to extra innings.

Pedro Álvarez powered Norfolk's offense with two hits, one of which was an RBI double that got the Tides on the board in the sixth inning. The RBI was his 11th of the homestand and upped his team-leading total to 27 runs batted in this season.

Norfolk got an exceptional start from Mike Wright, who took a shutout into the sixth inning before yielding a two-run homer to Delmonico. Wright allowed just three hits and two walks in the contest, striking out four while throwing 65 of his season-high 105 pitches for strikes. The East Carolina product has now surrendered three earned runs or less in each of his last seven starts, over which he's posted a 3.32 ERA (15 ER, 40.2 IP). Wright's Quality Start was his third in May and his team-leading fourth of the season.

Michael Bourn singled, walked twice, stole a base and scored a run for the Tides, while Drew Dosch and Armando Araiza each added a single and an RBI. With the loss, Norfolk wrapped up its homestand with a 3-4 record. After an off day Monday, the Tides will open up a three-game series in Toledo Tuesday night at 6:35. Jordan Kipper (1-0, 1.50) is scheduled to start for Norfolk, with airtime on ESPN Radio 94.1 set for 6:30 pm.
