11-year-old shot in Newport News

An 11-year-old boy was hit by gunfire while he was taking out the trash on Monday night.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WVEC) -- An 11-year-old boy was hit by gunfire while he was taking out the trash on Monday night.

According to police, the shooting happened in the 2200 block of Jefferson Avenue just after 10 p.m. 

When police arrived, they found an 11-year-old boy suffering from a gunshot wound to his left shoulder.  The boy was reportedly taking out the trash at the time he was shot. 

The victim was taken to a local hospital, where he was treated and released.  Investigators do not believe the child was the intended target.

No suspect information is available.
