4 suspects charged in Smithfield homicide; 1 in custody

We've learned an 18-year-old who was shot during an attempted armed robbery, has died

SMITHFIELD, Va. (WVEC) -- An 18-year-old is dead after an attempted armed robbery on Friday, police said.

According to officials, a call came in around 8:20 p.m. on the 1400 block of S. Church Street.

Police found 18-year-old Dakota Gordon with a gunshot wound to the stomach, and 19-year-old Gavin St.Clair with minor injuries from the incident.

Gordon was taken to Riverside Hospital for emergency surgery. He died on Dec. 31 due to complications from the surgery.

There is no word on St.Clair's condition at this time.

Police have identified three juvenile suspects and one adult suspect. After lengthy interviews and corroboration with with witnesses, all four have been changed.

The charges include homicide, use of firearm in commission of a felony, possession of a firearm by a juvenile, attempted robbery, conspiracy to commit robbery, malicious wounding and brandishing of a firearm. 

The name of the only adult suspect will be released upon arrest. One of the juvenile suspects was arrested on January 10, and charged with three counts of use of a firearm in commission of a felony, possess a firearm by juvenile, attempted robbery, malicious wounding and brandishing a firearm.

The juvenile is in custody at the Tidewater Detention Home.
