PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WVEC) -- Authorities are investigating a shooting that left one dead Tuesday morning.

Around 3:30 a.m. police responded to a shooting at Greenwood Drive and Viking Street.

The victim, 37-year-old Stevie W. Wright of Portsmouth was found at the scene.

Police say he suffered a fatal gunshot wound to his upper torso. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Family members were too distraught to talk on camera, but friends say Steve was a devoted father who recently graduated from Tidewater Community College with a certificate in welding.

"It's scary because this part of Cavalier Manor with the rec center being right there. I'm more shocked and concerned because never has it been this close to home," a concerned neighbor told 13News Now.

No suspect for additional information is available.
