Accident killed pedestrian in Norfolk

NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- Police are investigating a car accident that killed a pedestrian Saturday night.

Norfolk police were called at 9:45 p.m. to East 26th Street and Monticello.

A man was struck by a car and transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with serious injuries. He later died at the hospital from his injuries.

The victim was identified as Derek A. Vennie, 56, of the 2700 of Church Street in Norfolk. 

Police say a 2015 black Chevrolet Camero was traveling southbound in the 2500 block of Monticello Avenue. 

As Vennie attempted to cross the street, he was struck by the Camero.  The collision occurred approximately 100 feet south of the E. 26th Street/Monticello Avenue intersection.

The driver involved stayed on the scene.

Police temporarily closed down the intersection while investigating, and it has since been reopened.

No further information was released.
