Norfolk Police sergeant shot, suspect killed in Ocean View shooting

A Norfolk police sergeant is recovering at home after getting shot. The shootout with the suspect happened overnight on 14th bay street in Oceanview.

NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) – A Norfolk Police sergeant is out of the hospital after he was injured in a shooting that also left the suspect dead.

According to police, officers responded to an apartment in the 9600 block of 14th Bay Street for reports of a person with a weapon around 11:15 p.m. Sunday. That's in the Ocean View area of the city.

When officers arrived, residents told them a man with a firearm entered a nearby home. As they tried to make contact with the individual, police say the armed man shot a sergeant who was standing outside the residence.

Police returned fire, hitting the man. Officers attempted to administer first aid, but the man died at the scene.

Neighbor Mina St. Pierre lives across the street from where the shooting occurred.

"I thought it was fireworks at first," said St. Pierre. "And then I realized what was really going on and I was terrified."

The injured officer was struck in his ballistic vest, and was transported to a hospital. He was treated and later released. Authorities say the sergeant is a 20-year veteran of the police department.

Homeowners in the neighborhood said violence is unusual.

"It's very scary because I've lived in this house for 9.5 years," said Angela Graupmann. "Nothing like this has ever happened on this street that I know of."

At the request of the Norfolk Police Chief, the investigation is being taken over by Virginia State Police.

State police are still in the process of confirming the man's identity and notifying his next of kin.

Norfolk police say the officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative duty, pending the outcome of the investigation.
