Victim of Chesapeake shooting described as 'happy-go-lucky guy'

61-year-old Curtis Overton passed away after being shot late Wednesday night.

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WVEC) -- Police responded to an adult male lying on the ground in Chesapeake late Wednesday night.

When police arrived at the 3200 block of Camelot Boulevard around 11:12 p.m., they found an unresponsive victim with possible gunshot wounds.

The victim was 61-year-old Curtis Overton. He was taken to Sentara Norfolk General hospital with life-threatening injuries and later died.

Family members described Overton as a happy-go-lucky guy.

"I still can't believe he's actually been killed," said Jonquetta Felton, Overton's niece. "Just seems surreal. Would have never thought it would have happened to him."

Felton said Overton enjoyed driving around and collecting junk in the neighborhood to later sell to scrap yards. Neighbors believe that is exactly what he was doing when he was shot.

Who shot Overton remains a mystery. No suspect information has been released and a motive is still unclear.
