Volunteers to build a playground in six hours at local elementary school

NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- Approximately 225 city volunteers will come together to build a brand new playground in six hours at Sewells Point Elementary School.

The resident volunteers will joined by volunteers from various business, non-profits, and schools, including, CarMax, Military Child Education Coalition, and Norfolk Public Schools.

The event was organized by KaBOOM!, a national non-profit that is dedicated to "bringing balanced and active play into the daily lives of all kids, particularly those growing up in poverty in America."

The design of the playground is based off of drawings by children, created at a special design event held last March.

In addition to the new playground, an Imagination Playground in a Cart will be unveiled. Imagination Playground in a Cart is a collection of oversized blue foam parts that was granted to Wiloughby Elementary School by The CarMax Foundation and KaBOOM!

Volunteers will come together Thursday, April 27 to build the park, with the kick-off ceremony beginning at 8:30 a.m. A ribbon-cutting ceremony has been scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
