Bank of Cheer needs your help

(Delmarvanow.com) -- With delivery day quickly approaching, the Eastern Shore News Bank of Cheer drive is still short of the amount needed to deliver 200 boxes of food to less-fortunate residents of Virginia's Eastern Shore.

This year marks the 57th annual Bank of Cheer.

All money collected goes to fill boxes with a turkey, canned foods, flour and other staples. The supplies are delivered in mid-December, in time for recipients to prepare for Christmas.

The boxes are funded by readers of the Eastern Shore News through the annual Bank of Cheer fund drive. They are packed by local high school students and delivered by volunteers, including News staffers.

Recipients are selected by a committee of educators and community leaders with assistance from the Social Services departments of Accomack and Northampton counties.

Monetary donations can be brought to the News office at 25 Market St. in Onancock or mailed to Bank of Cheer, 25 Market St., Onancock, VA 23417.

Unless anonymity is requested, the News publishes the names of those donating to the Bank of Cheer drive in the paper. Donors also may specify if the gift is given in memory or in honor of an individual.

Traditionally, the Christmas boxes include a turkey or ham, canned meats, fruit, vegetables, flour and other staples.

Packages are delivered shortly before Christmas, in time for recipients to prepare for the holidays.
