Clean the Bay Day on Saturday

The Chesapeake Bay Foundation will host its largest annual event "

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WVEC) -- The Chesapeake Bay foundation is getting ready for one of its biggest events of the year. Saturday is "Clean the Bay Day," and this year, organizers expect  more than 6,000 volunteers.

"Chesapeake Bay Foundation deals with litter issues year-round, and pollution problems year-round," said Karen Jacklich, an assistant with the Clean the Bay Day organization.

While many spots are already full with volunteers, some places still need help.

"We do have walkup sites in Virginia Beach, Landstown High School. In Chesapeake we have the Dismal Swamp Trail Canal, [and] we do have City Park in Portsmouth still open," said Jacklich. Although some of the spots aren't directly on the water, Jacklich says that pollution and litter can still end up in the bay.

"If we don't do something now and teach our children that pollution is an issue, we're not going to be passing on a treasure," she added.

If you're interested in volunteering on Saturday, it's from 9 a.m. until noon. You can visit the Chesapeake Bay Foundation's website for more details.
