VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WVEC) -- While Puerto Rico picks up the pieces following Hurricane Maria, people here in Hampton Roads want to pitch in. One company's annual "Pick-a-Charity" bash kicks off in Virginia Beach on Thursday night, with hopes of making a big impact.
"We're gonna match all of the donations and give that to the American Red Cross to help the victims of Hurricanes Irma and Harvey," said Adam Newman, Chief Financial Officer of OVM Financial.
To get involved, Newman says to show up at The Shack on 8th in Virginia Beach.
"The ticket involves a $35 check made out to the charity of your choice," he said. Not only is the entire $35 donated, you also get free food and drinks.
"And there's even an Uber code, you'll get to get a $25 Uber ride anywhere on your way home," he added.
He said last year, about 250 people attended.
"There were actually over 55 charities that were given money to, since each person can decide where it wants to go to. And there was about $10,500 raised for that and we matched that and gave $10,500 to the Roc Solid Organization," said Newman.
He hopes to top that this year with at least 300 to 500 people showing up.
If you're interested, the event is from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, September 21. It's at The Shack, 8th and Atlantic in Virginia Beach. Newman says check is preferred, but they'll also take cash.
