Making Your Mark: Hampton Roads unites to feed those in need

Family Volunteer Day to feed those in need

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WVEC) -- There's been so much division in the country lately... but one event in Virginia Beach is bringing together at least 1,000 people of all different backgrounds and from all walks of life, in order to make a positive difference in the community.

On Saturday, VOLUNTEER Hampton Roads is holding its 18th annual Family Volunteer Day. Kids and parents work together with volunteers from other families and coworkers from many Hampton Roads companies to sort and box donated food that will be distributed to area food banks and service agencies to help those who would otherwise go hungry this Thanksgiving holiday.

One child told 13News Now he can't wait to help out. He put it like this: "Because they need food, and if they don't have food, they need to get food."

Last year, 18,000 pounds of food was collected for Family Volunteer Day, enough food to feed 800 families.

"I tell you, on behalf of VOLUNTEER Hampton Roads, I could not be prouder of our community," one organizer said.

"When you talk about true collaboration here in Hampton Roads, this event is that collaborative effort," said Michelle Ellis Young from Farm Fresh, who also serves on the Hampton Roads Corporate Volunteer Council. "We have people who may never cross paths ever again. But on that Saturday, they come together to do great work for our citizens in Hampton Roads."
