VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WVEC) -- Two programs offered by Wave City Care in local public schools are making a big impact by mentoring students from 5th grade through 8th.

Shine GIRL, for girls, and Man Power, for boys, are 12-week mentoring programs offered every spring, summer and fall.

Over 100 volunteers help facilitate the program to inspire and equip youth with skills to discover who they are and want to become.

Shine GIRL, focuses on the premise that every life counts and has value. Volunteers work with girls to know the importance of positive self-esteem.

Three concepts covered includes worth, strength, and real success. The program hopes to teach girls that they each have something to contribute and can shine beyond their potential.

Man POWER, help young boys learn what it really means to be a man in today's society through knowledge, attitudes and beliefs.

Volunteers focus on four points are, Real Men, Real Power, Real Influence, and Real Success.
