JAMES CITY COUNTY, Va. (WVEC) -- Emergency workers said Tuesday that they recovered a body off College Park Beach where they had been searching for a missing swimmer since Monday.
Tony Jimenez Garcia, 23, of Chesterfield was visiting the area with a church group when he went into the water to cool off. He was trying to swim to a sandbar with a relative. Garcia went under the water's surface and never came up.
James City County police and firefighters began searching for Garcia around 7:15 p.m. Monday. They had help from the National Park Service, Williamsburg Fire Department, Virginia Marine Police, the U.S. Navy, and the U.S. Coast Guard.
Crews found a body in the water shortly before 5 p.m. Tuesday.
Family members told 13News Now that Garcia was married earlier this year and that he was an avid swimmer. When he was in the water, the family thought he had torn a muscle. Garcia's father attempted to rescue him, but he couldn't.
A GoFundMe page was created to help the family with funeral expenses.
