Correctional officer fired, charged for sexual conduct with inmate

NORTHHAMPTON COUNTY, Va. (WVEC) -- A correctional officer at the Northampton County Sheriff's Office was relieved of her duties for having improper sexual conduct with an inmate.

According to Sheriff David L. Doughty, Jr., Maria D. Owens was relieved of her duties on November 1.

Owens has been charged with Carnal Knowledge of an Inmate and Illegal Conveyance of a Cellular Telephone to an Incarcerated Prisoner.

Due to the criminal aspect of the investigation, no further information has been released.

Owens has been assigned to work at the Eastern Shore Regional Jail as a correctional officer, then worked for Northampton County Sheriff's Office since 2004.

Jodecii Purnell, 25 of Westover, Maryland was charged with possessing a cell phone while in prison.
