Elizabeth City Police investigating armed robbery, 1 injured

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C., (WVEC) -- Elizabeth City Police are investigating an armed robbery at a convenience store where the store owner was injured.

On Thursday around 10 p.m., at the Star One Tobacco & Convenience located in the area of 440 North Hughes Boulevard police responded to an armed robbery.

Once on the scene, they located the store owner and victim, Esmal Saleh, 58. He sustained a cut to the left side of his neck and was transported to a local hospital. 

According to officials, a black male wearing glasses, a blue sweatshirt with a white strip, dark colored pants, and work boots entered the business. The suspect assaulted the victim with a knife and took an undisclosed amount of money.

The suspect was interrupted during the robbery by an employee that wasn’t working but stopped by to check on the victim. The employee was able to get away and get assistance at Headlights located next door. The suspect fled the area on foot towards the Richardson St. area.

Police were conducting patrols in the area around 2:35 a.m. on Friday and found the suspect hiding behind a residence in the 500 block of West Cypress Street.

The suspect has been identified as Nathan Lamonte Silver, 43, of Elizabeth City. He was given a $500K secured bond and his first court appearance is scheduled for October 23 in Pasquotank County.

Silver is currently being held at Albemarle District Jail.
