Family accused of trafficking guns, drugs across Hampton Roads

Several people are accused of money laundering and trafficking guns and drugs across Hampton Roads

HAMPTON, Va. (WVEC) -- A family of accused gang members is charged with money laundering and trafficking guns and drugs across Hampton Roads.

According to court documents, the ringleader is Alex Burnett.

Others charged in the case are Burnett's mother Shirley Burnett, her husband Robert Burnett, Alex Burnett's girlfriend Eleonora Paronuzzi, as well as three associates Mario Barrett, Charles McMillan, and Charles Bailey Jr.

Court documents show the FBI’s Safe Streets Peninsula Task Force followed the tracks of the group for at least two years. Federal investigators say they were involved in the trafficking of cocaine, heroin and guns for cash.

Court documents say investigators tracked illegal activities in various states including Virginia, New York, New Jersey, Georgia and California.

An alleged member of the bloods gang, court documents say Alex Burnett inherited the distribution role of the “family business” from his brother Rico Burnett who is in prison for the attempted capital murder of a police officer.

An eighth person was also named in the affidavit but hasn't been charged.

Alex Burnett waived his preliminary and detention hearings Wednesday and remains in custody. A judge granted Shirley Burnett $5,000 unsecured bond and ordered her not to have any contact with anyone involved in the case. Robert Burnett remains in jail after the judge ruled in favor of the government in his revocation of bond hearing.
