Teen pleads guilty to deadly shooting

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WVEC) -- A teenager has pleaded guilty following a string of shootings in Virginia Beach.

Police say 18-year-old Nicholas Cates is one of several suspects accused in half-a-dozen shootings in December of last year.

On Monday, Cates pleaded guilty Monday to first-degree murder, and as an accomplice to another killing.

Virginia Beach police said both victims were randomly chosen. Cates, who was 17 at the time, faces a life sentence plus eight years in prison at his October sentencing.

Police say the first killing occurred Dec. 2 when Cates and his 17-year-old friend Angelo Worlds approached 34-year-old Zacarias Aguilar-Ayala. Police say Cates drove while Worlds shot Aguilar-Ayala.

Two days later Cates fatally shot 60-year-old Christine Bender outside her home.  Police say Cates was accompanied by then-19-year-old Maurice Boney Jr., who is charged with conspiracy to commit murder.

Cates is scheduled to be sentenced in October. The Commonwealth's Attorney is still working on the cases against the other defendants.
