Newport News Police warn of credit card skimmers

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WVEC) Pump gas? Investigators want you to be on the lookout for credit card skimmers.

The Newport News Police Department's Economic Crimes Unit says the holiday season brings with it an increase in the number of skimming devices, particularly at gas stations.

Investigators urge you to look for sticker seals and for any loose items on the face of the pump.

"If the door moves easily or the card insert moves, switch to a different pump before competing the transaction," read the Newport News Police Department's press release.

Just this week alone, two new skimmers were located at two different 7-Eleven locations in Newport News. In both instances investigators say sticker seals were clearly tampered with or removed.

Police say they are not releasing the 7-Eleven locations, "because the devices have been removed and there are no known victims. We just want our citizens to be aware that we have located them recently and to remain vigilant."
