Police pursuit involving stolen vehicle ends Newport News

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WVEC) -- A police pursuit that started on the interstate ended at a Newport News Walmart where Virginia State Police apprehended a man accused of stealing a vehicle.

We're told that shortly after 9:30 p.m. Friday, Newport News Police followed a 2015 Ford Expedition which police were aware was stolen.

Newport News officers called State Police for assistance in stopping the vehicle.

State Troopers began pursuing the vehicle on I-64 westbound near Jefferson Ave.

The driver fled to the Walmart on Jefferson Ave., just off the interstate, abandoned the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot.

Officers were able to capture the driver.

The suspect, 20-year-old Oliver Copeland, is charged with felony eluding, as well as felony possession of stolen property, driving while suspended, possession of marijuana, and reckless driving.

Copeland is currently being held in the Newport News Jail without bond.

No one was injured and no vehicles were damaged.
