VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WVEC) -- NFL player Justin Scott Hunter is out on $25,000 bond after he was arrested July 20 for his alleged participation in a large fight July 3 at the Oceanfront.
Hunter, who is from Virginia Beach, lives in Tennessee where he is a wide receiver for the Tennessee Titans.
Officers were called to the fight at the Sandbar Raw Bar at 2110 Atlantic Avenue in the early morning hours July 3.
During Hunter's arraignment, prosecutors said that Hunter punched the victim at least twice inside the bar.
After Hunter left the bar, prosecutors say he got out of a vehicle that pulled up while the victim was coughing up blood on the sidewalk. Hunter then allegedly tapped the victim's shoulder and "sucker punched" him.
Virginia Beach Police released the surveillance video below August 6 in an attempt to identify possible witnesses.
Anyone who can assist police in identifying the two men in the video are asked to call Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.
Police arrested one person for being drunk in public that night, unrelated to the assault investigation.
The victim in the case was treated at the hospital.
Hunter appeared in court July 21 on a charge of Felonious Assault. He was released on a $25,000 secured bond and can return to Titans training camp where he will be under tight security. The judge listed the following terms to Hunter's bond:
- Remain on good behavior, to include no new criminal charges or serious traffic offenses
- Must stay employed with Tennessee Titans or actively seek employment if that ends
- May not consume any drugs or alcohol
- Remain home under curfew from 11 p.m. until 5 a.m.
- Have no contact with the victim or any of the witnesses in this case – direct or indirect
The Titans released a one-sentence statement July 20: "We are aware of the situation and are continuing to gather more facts."
Hunter was born May 20, 1991. He was a standout athlete at Ocean Lakes High School where he had 46 receptions for 714 yards and nine touchdowns.
After graduating from Ocean Lakes, he received multiple scholarship offers before accepting one at the University of Tennessee. With the Vols, he appeared in 28 games over three seasons, making 17 starts. When he left Knoxville, he ranked 11th on the Vols' all-time receptions list with 106. He had 1,812 receiving yards and 18 touchdowns.
The Titans made him their second-round draft pick, the 34th overall selection in the 2013 draft. In two pro seasons, he has played in 26 games with eight starts. He has 46 receptions for 852 yards and seven touchdowns. He missed the final four games of the 2014 season after he was injured against the New York Giants on Dec. 7.
The Titans press guide says he splits his time between Nashville and Virginia Beach.
Hunter is due back in court for a preliminary hearing September 3. The case remains under investigation.
