Virginia Beach hairstylist charged with murder: 'I shot him'

What was first called a "suspicious death" is now a murder case, and police have made an arrest

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va (WVEC) -- Days after a hairstylist was arrested for murder, clients were still showing up to her doorstep.

Nancy Copeland, 49, was charged after police say an argument led to a shooting in the 600 block of Westminster Lane.

Homes in the Hilltop neighborhood were blocked off for hours last Friday. Several people were detained for questioning, police said.

Court documents say that night, Copland called EMS and said "I shot him".

Police later identified the victim as 59-year-old David R. Gonzalez.

Online records state at one point, the two lived at the same address in Virginia Beach, but Copeland moved out. The two were also considered "business associates."

Copeland worked for a company called Hair By Michelle for seven years, according to her bond determination sheet. "Michelle" is Copeland's middle name, paperwork said.

A quick online search revealed the suspect is a Cosmetologist in Virginia Beach and lives at the scene of the shooting. She's also pictured on the business' Facebook page as a hairstylist.

Wednesday, a sign on her front door said the business was closed down, citing an "abrupt" leave because of a "family emergency".

Some clients seemed to be left in the dark as they showed up to the home saying "What's going on?".

People living at the address refused to speak with 13News Now at first, but one person later said "It's been hard for everyone".

The question remains: "Why?"

Copeland refused media interviews from jail. She is currently behind bars without bond, and charged with 2nd Degree Murder and use of a firearm.
