Drop off expired medications at Va. Beach police precincts

Most people don't dispose of their old or expired medications properly. So the police department set aside several hours Saturday to take them.

VIRGINIA BEACH -- When was the last time you cleaned out your medicine cabinet?

If you can't remember, it's probably time to check what's being stored there.

On Saturday at the four Virginia Beach police precincts, you can drop off your expired medications (prescription, over-the-counter meds, and even pet medications).

Drop off is from 9:00 a.m. to noon and no questions asked.

A big reason for the effort is to keep people from flushing medications down the toilet or tossing them in the garbage.

'It can get into people's ground water, the ocean. People live on well water also. It is a concern that some of the medications can filter through the system and become a contaminant in thier home,' explained Sgt. Pat Harris, who is running the program.

Harris also says it's a way to keep medications from getting into the wrong hands.

'There's a chance children could accidently take their medications or someone steal them from their house for illegal purposes -- for resale or abuse,' Harris added.

Harris says medications can be dropped off any time at any precinct. Just ask the police department to destroy them.
