Family receives chilling voicemail of potential murder victim in distress

A greiving family remembers this man, 39-year-old Aaron Richardson

NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) – The family of a murder victim received a chilling voicemail message that may have been recorded in the final moments of Aaron Richardson's life.

The 39-year-old was shot and killed on Kitchener Avenue early Wednesday morning.

Richardson’s cousin Ernest Smith was notified when he was at work.

“I just can’t believe he’s gone. My uncle called me and told me my cousin passed away. It was horrible. Me and my cousin—we were really close growing up and stuff,” Smith said.

After Smith heard the news of his cousin’s death, he received a voicemail from an unknown number.

“It was a message of him just pleading and crying and begging for his life,” he said.

The message lasted for about 20 seconds, and it is clear someone was in distress.

“Nobody deserves to be tortured. You could just hear it--like all the pain in his voice and stuff. You can tell they was doing something to him. He was crying and begging,” Smith said.

Smith said Richardson a fun loving guy who loved his family.

“He liked to joke a lot--always cracking jokes. He was really funny. He probably could have been a comedian if he pursued it.”

Police said detectives are working with family members regarding any potential evidence but cannot comment on it because it is part of an ongoing investigation.

Anyone with information on Richardson’s death is asked to call the crime line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.
