Four separate fires reported within 90 min. in Newport News

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WVEC) -- The Newport News Fire Department responded to four separate calls of fires and three accidents within the span of 90 minutes in the north end of the city, Friday. 

The rush of emergencies started at 12:40 p.m. when emergency crews were called to a shed fire in the 200 block of Eastwood Dr. When crews arrived on scene the found the shed was heavily involved with flames. Fire investigators have not been able to determine the cause of this fire, but it remains under investigation. There were no injuries reported. 

Crews were called to another fire only three minutes later. The residential fire was reported in the 100 block of Clipper Dr. When fire fighters arrived on scene they found the fire could be seen in the garage and attached kitchen area of a single story home. Two people were in the house at the time of the fire, both were treated by medics at the scene. The garage sustained heavy fire damage, the home has heavy smoke damage throughout. The cause of this fire is unknown at this time, it remains under investigation. 

A third fire was reported at 2:01 p.m. The apartment fire occurred in the 13000 block of Aqueduct Dr. Crews arrived and were able to see light smoke coming a second level apartment. After entering the unit, crews found a smoldering mattress in the upper level bedroom. Two children and one adult were inside the apartment at the time of the fire. The owner was taken to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation. Fire officials says the fire was started while the children were playing with matches. 

Four minutes later the department was alerted of a kitchen fire in the 100 block of Abbey Court. When crews arrived on scene the found light smoke in the structure, and burnt materials on the stove. One person was home at the time of the fire, but they did not require treatment. Officials say the unattended cooking started the fire. The occupant was allowed to stay in the apartment but the stove was unplugged.
