German cruise ship docks in Norfolk, 3K passengers aboard

NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- One of the largest ships to stop in Norfolk docked on Sunday.

The 968-foot long German cruise ship docked at 7 a.m. and departs at 6 p.m. on Sunday.

With 2,716 passengers onboard and 1,037 crew members the TUI Cruises' Mein Schiff 6 makes its first visit to Norfolk.  Mein Schiff 6 translated to "My Ship 6."

A ceremony is expected to take place onboard the vessel Sunday to officially recognize this inaugural call, and mark the beginning of a new partnership with Norfolk.

TUI is following in the footsteps of its German competitor, AIDA Cruises, which has made frequent port-of-call stops in Norfolk. European travelers particularly like this area because of the abundance of early American history and activity-based excursions.

The ship will be returning on October 30, one of four more port-of-call visits through 2018.
