Great white shark pings off Delmarva coast

(Delmarvanow.com) -- Delmarva, we have another shark.

Miss Costa, a white shark, pinged off Virginia on Wednesday afternoon. This was her first ping off Delmarva on her southbound journey this year.

A ping occurs and is charted when a shark's dorsal fin breaks the surface of the water. The ping sends information about the location to a satellite.

According to the Ocearch website, Miss Costa is 12 feet, 5 inches long and weighs 1,668 pounds. She is a female described to be in the "immature" stage of life.

She was tagged Sept. 23, 2016, off Nantucket, Massachusetts.

Miss Costa is the first shark to ping off Delmarva since the summer season ended.

Ocearch is an organization dedicated to the telemetry, conservation and study of keystone marine species. To track Miss Costa, click HERE
