Hampton University professor wins big with Va. Lottery scratch off

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WVEC) -- A Hampton University professor won $1 million from a Virginia Lottery scratch off.

Dr. Calvin Lowe scratched his Golden Bar Bonanza to realize he had won the grand prize.

Lowe, the Dean of the School of Science, bought his winning ticket with his wife at the 7-Eleven located at 744 J. Clyde Morris Boulevard.

He had the choice of taking the full $1 million prize over 30 years or a one-time cash option of $675,982 before taxes.

The winning store even gets to cash out with a $10,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket.

Dr. Calvin Lowe plans to save most of his winnings for retirement.

The Gold Bar Bonanza features prizes ranging from $10 to $1 million. This was the first time a $1 million prize was claimed meaning there are still three other top prizes still available.

The odds of winning the top prize are 1 in 1,101,600.
